Colombian immigration rescues seventeen minors from Lev Tahor

(MENAFN) Colombian immigration authorities announced Sunday that they rescued 17 minors from Lev Tahor, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish group long accused of child abuse and controversial practices, according to reports.

The group, described by authorities and former members as cultlike, is known for enforcing strict interpretations of Jewish law, isolating followers, promoting child marriages, imposing rigid relocations, and mandating severe dress codes—practices that have drawn international scrutiny and investigations over the past decade.

“We have rescued 17 boys, girls and teens,” Colombia’s immigration service said on the social media platform X, sharing images of some of the minors with their faces blurred or concealed. Police reports indicated that the rescued children were from the US, Canada, and Guatemala.

The operation took place Sunday in Yarumal, in the Antioquia region. Authorities noted that five of the minors had active Interpol “yellow notices,” issued for children considered at risk of abduction or trafficking.

Gloria Esperanza Arriero, head of Migracion Colombia, told reporters that protecting the minors was the “absolute priority” and emphasized that the operation was conducted in coordination with multiple Colombian agencies to safeguard the children’s rights and well-being. She added that the case is linked to an ongoing US legal process and did not involve abducted children.
